Spiritual Meanings of Gas and Bloating - by Jenna Volpe

Spiritual Meanings of Gas and Bloating

As a holistic gut health dietitian and former energy healing practitioner who has been in remission from irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) since 2014, one of the many questions I was forced to unpack at a certain point on my healing journey was: What is the spiritual meaning of gas and bloating?

And if you’re reading this, you’ve likely also come to the realization that in order to fully heal (and STAY healed), we must transcend beyond just the physical realm of health and wellbeing into the mental, emotional and spiritual realm.

In this article I’ll share my interpretations and perspectives on the spiritual meanings of gas and bloating from a holistic root-cause standpoint, based on my own research and experiences.

First things first: Foundational interventions

When we aren’t addressing imbalances on a mental/emotional/spiritual level, these patterns will almost always eventually manifest into physical ailments if left unchecked for too long.

However, I recommend beginning with physical-level interventions as part of a clinically-sound, foundational root-cause approach when addressing any and all health issues.

Gas and bloating, while common, aren’t normal.

Chronic symptoms of gas/bloating typically indicate that something deeper is out of alignment in your gut, on a physical level – and it’s worth exploring!

Physical root causes of gas/bloating

Before diving deeper into the spiritual meaning of gas and bloating, I encourage you to explore, uncover, address and resolve possible physical root causes of gas/bloating such as:

  • Not chewing food well enough (and/or eating too fast)
  • Eating too much food, relative to what your gut can digest at a given time
  • Food intolerances (FODMAPs, lactose, fructose, sulfur, sucrose, starch, etc.)
  • Digestive insufficiency – aka low stomach acid, insufficient enzyme production, and/or not making/releasing enough bile
  • Low gut microbial diversity – aka not enough probiotic microbes living in your colon
  • Gut microbial imbalance (such as dysbiosis, small intestinal bacterial overgrowth, and/or mold/fungal overgrowth)

I recommend keeping a food-symptom journal and working with a functional registered dietitian who specializes in gut health if you’d like to get to the bottom of that physical stuff sooner rather than later. 😉

Physical diet/lifestyle interventions

Once you’ve pinpointed any and all physical underlying root causes and symptom-trigger foods, it’s important to take aligned action. (Knowing what’s out of alignment may be necessary, but knowledge and awareness without action are not enough to resolve the imbalance!)

That said, in addition to food journaling and clinical testing, you may also want to look into some of the following holistic interventions for gas and bloating:

Okay, now that we’ve covered the most common underlying root causes and holistic remedies for gas/bloating on the physical level, let’s dive into the potential spiritual and energetic meaning behind these symptoms.

Gas and bloating in the body: as within, so without

As the wise Hermes Trismigistus and the Hermetic teachings have told us, “As within, so without… as without, so within.”

So in order to uncover what your body could be trying to tell you, let’s explore the possible spiritual meanings of gas and bloating based on what is happening within.

In essence, gas and bloating are essentially the result and culmination of excess, trapped air in our intestines and/or colon.

  • Note that our intestines and colon are digestive organs which correspond to the hara, our second chakra or energy center above the root chakra).

As I mentioned above, the excess air (gas/bloating) is created by unhealthy microbial fermentation of undigested food in our gut.

To reiterate, this type of microbial fermentation which would result in symptoms of gas and bloating is caused by a type of unhealthy overgrowth.

  • More specifically, when I say “overgrowth” I’m referring to parasitic/unhealthy, dysbiotic microbes which have colonized in our intestine/colon and which are consuming and fermenting undigested food particles from our food.

Lastly, I find that microbial overgrowth often goes hand-in-hand with digestive insufficiency which usually means not making enough digestive secretions such as stomach acid, bile, and enzymes.

Now, if we were to examine all of this from a metaphysical lens, what are we looking at on a deeper level?

Food for thought: Breaking it down

Gas and bloating often reflect an excess amount of trapped air in the gut.

Some questions to consider when you’re experiencing an excess of air in your gut:

    • Are you overthinking, too in your head, and not fully processing something on a deeper emotional level?
    • Are you feeling burnt out from exerting too much masculine energy? (Think: hustle, grind)
    • Are you getting lots of new ideas, aspirations, or thoughts, but not acting on them?

If any of the above resonates, please feel free to journal, pray, meditate, or contemplate on it and see what God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit reveal to you!

But keep reading – there’s more.

    Unhealed emotional wounds

In spiritual deliverance, unhealed emotional wounds are referred to as “soul wounds”. These, when left unchecked, are considered to be “open doors” or access points for demons to then begin oppressing us.

Most people think of possession and psychiatric symptoms (hallucinations, etc.) when they hear “demonic oppression”- but in many cases, the spirit of infirmity may be at work, making you sick.

A few questions to consider contemplating on:

    • Have you ever noticed you seem to “swallow the stress” of an intense or traumatic life situation that still needs to be acknowledged and processed on a more conscious emotional level?
    • Do you have unprocessed trauma and emotional wounds that need to be healed?

(Note:  “Trauma” is a relative term; it’s all about how your nervous system reacts to an environment or situation. If you find your nervous system in a state of hypervigilance, this could be your body perceiving an event or situation as a trauma.)

    Unforgiveness

In addition to unhealed soul wounds, unforgiveness in and of itself (not forgiving those who have hurt us in the past) can be an open door to demonic oppression.

Consider looking back on who you need to forgive, and make a point to forgive them in your heart for whatever they did to hurt you. (Easier said than done, and of course this doesn’t excuse their behavior!)

But the work doesn’t stop there.

Once you’ve forgiven people from your past who hurt you, the next step in deliverance is to take authority (in the name of Jesus Christ) and verbally command any and all evil spirits who have ever attached to you through each of those people to be “gone to the pit, in the name of Jesus Christ”.

Consider working with a certified deliverance practitioner who can guide you through this process safely and effectively.

    Undigested food

In cases of gas and/or bloating, the undigested food (which ends up getting fermented by microbes in our gut) may represent something we’re taking in or consuming, but not fully processing or digesting in life.

Metaphorically, we don’t just consume food – we may also consume any or all of the following:

    • Books you read
    • Movies and TV shows you watch
    • Conversations with others
    • Gossip
    • News
    • Health information
    • Education
    • Social media scrolling

    Some questions to consider:

    • Are you surrounding yourself with people who empower you and inspire you, or people who invoke feelings of fear/overwhelm, resentment, unforgiveness, bitterness, etc.? (All of these can negatively impact your physical health!)
    • Are you biting off more than you can chew (not just literally, but metaphorically)?
    • Are you “consuming” junk, or consuming more than you’re creating? (This one seems to ring true for a lot of my fellow entrepreneurs!)
    • Is there something (or someone) in your life you aren’t tolerating?
    • Are you taking on too much?  Are you overcommitting?
    • Do you feel overwhelmed, or “in over your head”?
    • Is there something you haven’t yet been able to process because your life is too jam-packed with commitments? Are you swallowing a stressful situation, but not fully processing it?

    Unwanted, invading “dysbiotic” organisms

If your gas/bloating is caused by an overgrowth, you may want to consider the company you’re keeping- and you will want to fill up with the Holy Spirit and the word of God each day, through prayer and Bible study (respectively).

“When an unclean spirit goes out of a man, he goes through dry places, seeking rest, and finds none. Then he says, ‘I will return to my house from which I came.’ And when he comes, he finds it empty, swept, and put in order. Then he goes and takes with him seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter and dwell there; and the last state of that man is worse than the first. So shall it also be with this wicked generation.” – Matthew12:43-45 (NKJV)

This is what happens in the body, when you kill off your healthy bacteria with antibiotics- it creates an open space for dysbiotic, opportunistic microbes to come in and overgrow.

    Some questions to consider here:

    • Are you giving too much power to the opinions of others in your life, who may not always have your best interest at heart?
    • Are you living in unrepented sin, and/or unforgiveness, leaving doors open for unclean spirits? Think beyond the 10 commandments – idolatry (crystals, divination, energy healing), etc.
    • Might others’ opinions of you lead to overthinking and/or compromising your wellbeing?
    • Are you letting some toxic people into your inner circle?

Each person’s life circumstances are unique, but these are all questions to consider.

    Deficient stomach acid

Low stomach acid, low bile, and/or insufficient digestive enzyme production are types of digestive insufficiency, which indicates a deficiency of fire element in our stomach.

This imbalance may impact your stomach, liver, gallbladder, and pancreas – the digestive organs responsible for making and releasing secretions that help break down our food into smaller particles (after it’s been chewed and swallowed).

I’ve also found that not being anchored to your identity in Christ may weaken digestion in some people.

The fire element is transmutative, literally transforming something from one state to another.  On a behavioral level, the fire element is about taking action and being decisive. The Holy Spirit also represents a fire which burns within us and clears out impurities.

Below are some questions to ponder if you find that you’re prone to digestive insufficiency, which indicates a weak or deficiency digestive fire:

    • Do you struggle with decisiveness, will power, or self-discipline to see goals/projects through to completion?
    • Do you ignore your “gut feelings” or not trust your gut?
    • Are you seeking identity and validation from external sources instead of resting in your identity in Christ?
    • Have you neglected your authority in Jesus and not yet leveraged the fire of the Holy Spirit within you (if you’re a Christian believer)?

If you find yourself answering head “yes” to any of the above questions, your fire element and solar plexus may need tending to.

    Recap: Putting it all together

On a physical level, gas and bloating are a sign that you could be experiencing some degree of digestive insufficiency and/or microbial imbalance.

Before diving into the spiritual significance of gas and bloating I encourage you to work with a qualified functional medicine healthcare provider who can help you optimize your diet and align with the right herbs/supplements for digestive support and gut-healing.

But if you or your clients are already doing what feels like “all the things” physically for your gas/bloat, and have hit a glass ceiling, it’s time to explore the underlying mental/emotional and spiritual factors at play.  (After all, I believe our psychology becomes our biology!)

The following are my interpretations of what gas and bloating may potentially represent for you or your clients, spiritually:

    • Unhealed soul wounds (physical/emotional traumas)
    • Unforgiveness
    • Undigested, unprocessed “stuff”
    • Weak connection to Jesus and the Holy Spirit
    • Possibly dysbiotic (toxic, unhealthy) unclean spirits – demonic oppression

What this can translate to in real life:

    • Undigested thoughts, feelings, or events that need to be processed
    • Over-consuming (are you consuming more than you’re creating, as an entrepreneur?)
    • Feelings of overwhelm, possibly related to over-committing and “biting off more than you can chew”
    • Giving too much power or importance to the opinions of others (or putting others before God)
    • Letting toxic people stay in your life
