On my own healing journey (inspired by my clinical encounters with others), I’ve spent 10+ years exploring the spiritual meaning of allergies through various means.
For context, shortly after developing pretty sudden-onset irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) in my early 20s, I also started developing allergies to a wide variety of foods and was diagnosed with a condition called Oral Allergy Syndrome (OAS). I’ve since been about to resolve over a dozen food and environmental allergies – but some allergies still linger, as of the time I’m writing this.
My findings, in summary: Initially, I believed that allergies may manifest when our brain and immune system (our internal security system) are working together to protect us from experiencing certain memories and difficult emotions (such as grief, hurt, etc.) specifically related to violations and traumas in the form of betrayal and dishonor.
However, after I was “born again” as a Christian believer in 2025, I’ve since experienced more breakthroughs and revelations in terms of uncovering the true spiritual root of allergies at a deeper and more comprehensive level.
Spoiler alert: I used to think allergies were merely a reflection and representation mental/emotional imbalances related to being fearful and over-reactive (think: hypochondria and/or paranoia), However, I know understand allergies can be the result of unhealed emotional wounds, aka “soul wounds” (following a trauma such as betrayal, deception, sexual violation, etc.), and often also subsequent unforgiveness.
The traumatic events themselves lead to soul wounds which in and of themselves, when unhealed, become access points or “open doors” for demonic oppression. To boot, unforgiveness (not forgiving the person or people who betrayed/deceived/violated you) is also an open door or demonic access point from a Christian perspective.
The good news is there are lots of things you can do to address these spiritual roots of allergies. Read on for a deeper dive into my insights and perspectives on the mental, emotional, energetic and spiritual roots of allergies (and what you can do about them) based on a fusion of experiences and research!

First things first: What are allergies?
Before we unpack the possible spiritual meanings of allergies, let’s first take a closer look at allergies on the physical level. (As within, so without!)
Allergies are a type of dysregulated immune system response which may develop after we’re exposed to certain particles from our environment and/or certain food particles.
A dysregulated immune system perceives and flags a food particle, chemical, metal, or other environmental particle as an “antigen” (enemy).
- In contrast, a healthy immune system will exclusively flag and attack viruses, microbial infections, and toxic substances while being able to discern and recognize foods and neutral particles from our environment.
Special memory cells in your immune system will then take note of this ‘red flag ‘ which initially gets created by a type of protein called Immunoglobulin E (IgE).
So, the next time you’re exposed to that particular food or environmental “antigen”, certain white blood cells in your immune system (mast cells) will recognize it and release an inflammatory chemical (“mediator”) called histamine, in efforts to protect you from the perceived threat.
The release of histamine, while intended to be a protective mechanism, leads to a chain of inflammatory events in the mucus membranes of your body. The end result is unwanted histamine-induced symptoms, AKA: an “allergic reaction”.
Allergy symptoms
When you’re experiencing an allergic reaction, your symptoms can range from very mild to very severe or even fatal/life-threatening.
Mild to moderate allergy symptoms include, but aren’t limited to:
- Itchy, red, watery eyes
- Runny nose (with clear, watery mucus)
- Itchy ears and throat
- Excessive sneezing
- Breaking out into hives or a rash
- Itching/tingling in your mouth, throat, lips, and/or tongue (after eating a reactive food)
- Nausea (after eating small amounts of a mildly reactive food)
More severe symptoms of an allergic reaction can include, but aren’t limited to:
- Sudden-onset nausea and vomiting
- Severe diarrhea
- Throat/tongue/lips swelling
- Difficulty breathing
- Airways closing up
- Anaphylaxis
Note that symptoms of an allergic reaction are usually pretty sudden-onset, and they occur only after exposure to the reactive particle(s).
According to the American College of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology, symptoms of a more severe allergic reaction (such as anaphylaxis) can last for up to 12 hours after the initial exposure.
Allergic reactions will occur exclusively via our MAST cells (a type of white blood cell which lines our mucus membranes of the body) which are located in the following areas:
- Mouth/throat
- Nose
- Ears
- Lungs/airways
- Gut/GI tract
- Skin
It’s possible to be allergic to virtually anything, but “allergens” are most often environmental particles and food proteins.
Environmental allergies
Some of the most common environmental allergens include, but aren’t limited to:
- Animal dander (cats, dogs, etc.)
- Insects (cockroaches, fire ants, etc.)
- Pollens from various types of flowers, weeds, grass, and/or trees
- Mold
- Pesticides/fungicides/herbicides and other chemicals
- Metals (nickel, silver, gold, etc.)
It’s also possible to become allergic to medications of any kind.
Food allergies
Food allergies occur when we’ve eaten a reactive food that our immune system has flagged as a threat.
It’s the proteins in food allergens that trigger an allergic reaction (caused by a release of histamine, an inflammatory “mediator”, from our mast cells into our bloodstream).
- For example, I have a peanut allergy but I can consume foods that were cooked in peanut oil (oil = 100% fat, no protein) without reacting.
The 8 most common types of food allergens are (in no particular order):
- Wheat
- Dairy
- Shellfish
- Fin fish
- Eggs
- Soy
- Peanuts
- Tree nuts
We can technically become allergic to virtually any type of food that contains protein (even in the form of live enzymes found in raw fruits/veggies!) if our immune system is dysregulated, our gut microbiome is unhealthy, and/or our nervous system is miswired.
But you should note that not all adverse food reactions are caused by allergies.
Food allergies vs. sensitivities vs. intolerances – what’s the difference?
A frequently asked question that comes up in my functional nutrition blog and virtual clinic, Whole-istic Living, is “what’s the difference between food allergies, food sensitivities and food intolerances?”
It’s a wonderful question to ask, because I often hear people falsely referring to their food intolerances and sensitivities as “allergies” – and vice versa.
Food allergies and food sensitivities involve our immune system.
Intolerances, on the other hand, are exclusively related to digestive insufficiency and/or gut microbial imbalances.
Symptoms of food intolerances can only occur in our gut (think: gas, bloating, constipation, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, heartburn, abdominal pain) while symptoms of food allergies and food sensitivity reactions are NOT limited to just our gut.
For example, food allergy reactions exclusively occur via our mast cells (and thus are happening mostly within the mucus membranes of our body: gut, skin, ears, nose, throat, & lungs).
On the other hand, food sensitivity reactions can occur in ANY type of white blood cell and can occur systematically, anywhere in our body, in the form of diet-induced inflammation.
When dealing with food allergies and food intolerances, the symptoms will be relatively instant (usually within 30-60 minutes).
Symptoms of a food sensitivity, on the other hand, are more likely to be delayed, up to ~72-96 hours later after consuming a reactive food.

Allergies in the body: quick recap
Allergies on a physical level are an overreaction from our immune system, aka our “Protector” and inner self-defense system.
When we have allergies, our internal security system (immune system) is falsely perceiving something that is SUPPOSED to be neutral or even a benevolent ally as dangerous/harmful.
Now that we’ve covered the physical mechanism of allergies in the body, let’s take a look at what’s causing this on a deeper level. (Spoiler alert: it’s not just genetics!)
What causes allergies on a physical level?
Genetics
Folks who are born with allergies may have inherited these genetically from their parents.
This is often the case when people have lifelong allergies that began during early infancy.
However, there are many other cases where allergies can pop up secondary to gut imbalances, whether they developed at a young age or later in life.
Gut imbalances
Human studies have confirmed ~70% of our immune system coincides with our gut, so imbalances in our gut microbiome can precede the onset of food allergies. (1, 2)
So, if our gut is unhealthy, our immune system can or will eventually become dysregulated as well.
Even if you’ve had allergies since you were a baby, it’s worth noting that allergies and immune imbalances can be passed from mother to baby via the microbiome, during delivery and through breastfeeding (or lack thereof).
Birthing delivery method and allergies
Babies are born with a sterile gut (no microbes in there at all!) and thus everyone born vaginally automatically receives our first critical microbial “inoculation” from mom, while making our first debut into the world… through and out the vaginal birth canal. (3, 4)
If applicable, the vaginal birth canal is where we FIRST make direct contact with mom’s microbiome and receive our first “gulp” of microbial inoculation… for better or worse.
If mom’s microbes are healthy and diverse, and you were born vaginally, you’re statistically more likely to develop a healthy gut and balanced immune system.
On the other hand, if your mother (at the time of delivery) has allergies or other immune system imbalances caused by unhealthy (“dysbiotic”) gut flora, then YOU may, by physical osmosis, receive those dysbiotic gut microbes from mom, on your way out of the birth canal. And then you may potentially develop a similar dysregulated immune system in the form of allergies.
- Many people mistake these types of lifelong allergies to be a genetic inheritance due to their early onset, but they’re often microbially influenced and can technically be addressed/resolved.
Babies born via C-section are generally at increased risk of developing allergies. (3, 5) This is because they’re missing out on that critical gut microbial inoculation from mom (assuming mom’s microbiome is healthy and diverse) when these babies bypass the vaginal birth canal.
- Not receiving that initial inoculation from mom during birth will leave opportunity for unhealthy microbes to colonize in your gut, leading to “dysbiosis” – aka imbalanced, unhealthy gut flora – which can be linked with allergies. (3, 5)
NOTE: Before we go any further, I want to acknowledge that I understand opting for a C-section is usually not a choice but rather a medically necessary procedure that has saved countless lives.
This info is not meant to blame or shame anyone but rather to educate you, so you can hopefully take a more informed, proactive, empowered approach on your health journey.
I also want to note that not ALL people with allergies were born via C-section, and not all people who were born via C-section will develop allergies!
It’s not that simple. There’s more to consider.
Breastfeeding versus formula feeding and allergies
As someone who was formula-fed and then developed allergies throughout the first 21 years of my life, I may be a little biased here – but lots of research has shown that breastfeeding CAN potentially have a protective effect against the development of allergies. (6, 7, 8)
However, there are also lots of studies with mixed, inconclusive research on the correlation between breastfeeding and allergy development. (9, 10, 11, 12)
I believe the role of breastfeeding on allergy development will vary depending on (1) genetics and (2) the state of mom’s microbiome at the time of breastfeeding. (Remember: if mom has dysbiosis, this can pass onto the baby & contribute to a dysregulated immune system.)
There are other factors that impact our gut microbiome and our immune function as well.
Antibiotics and allergies
There are some research-based correlations between excessive antibiotic exposure and the development of allergies. (13, 14)
While some studies have been mixed/inconclusive in terms of the impact antibiotics have on allergies, every round of antibiotics (which are usually broad-spectrum) – not just from pharmaceuticals but also in our livestock – CAN often, to a certain extent, induce some collateral damage, wiping out our probiotic “commensal” microbes in our gut. (15, 16)
This creates a breeding ground for – you guessed it – opportunistic, pathogenic, and dysbiotic microbes to start colonizing and setting up camp in our gut, potentially increasing our risk of developing allergies.
Note: I’m not AGAINST the use of antibiotics; I understand they can be medically necessary and life-saving in many cases.
However, I do advocate for taking them responsibly (based on medical necessity only) and purchasing organic, antibiotic-free (no-added-antibiotics) dairy products, meat/poultry, eggs, etc. whenever possible.
I also love leaning into evidence-based antimicrobial herbs as viable alternatives to their broad-spectrum pharmaceutical counterparts, when possible.
The Standard American Diet and allergies
Poor food choices (a diet high in ultra-processed foods and low in nutrient-dense, prebiotic and probiotic-rich foods) can set the stage for an unhealthy gut microbiome, which sets the foundation for a dysregulated immune system.
That’s because ultra-processed sugars and flours have been shown to feed unhealthy, dysbiotic microbes associated with IBS and allergies, while prebiotic-rich fruits, veggies, herbs and spices generally support a healthier and more robust gut microbiome.
If you follow a “Standard American Diet” (think: sugary cereal or bagels or muffins/pastries at breakfast, sandwiches made with white bread and a side of potato chips at lunch, fried food/fast food/white pasta at dinner often, and regular consumption of candy/ice cream/fried chips/snack foods like Goldfish, CheezIts, etc.)…
…I think you may want to first begin your journey with my Holistic Eating Blueprint virtual self-study course where we optimize your diet gradually, over the course of a few months, replacing inflammatory food with anti-inflammatory alternatives.

Physical causes of allergies: Final thoughts
FYI – I’m not sharing this info on C-sections, formula feeding, antibiotics or our food choices to blame or shame anybody but rather to provide you with a deeper level of understanding on how allergies can develop from a holistic and functional nutrition standpoint on the PHYSICAL level.
The key takeaway here is that we’re actually more in control of our immune system than we realize! It’s not all just genetics.
This was the case for me; I was formula-fed, grew up on a Standard American Diet for the first 16 years of my life, and received way too many rounds of antibiotics. Combine this with a lot of stress and mental/emotional triggers… and I ended up with a perfect storm of dysbiosis, leaky gut, IBS and allergies by the time I was 21 years old.
On a positive note: After just 1 year of overhauling my diet and lifestyle I was able to “gain back” ~12 foods that I had previously reacted to and previously tested as “allergic to” at the allergy clinics. (I’m also no longer allergic to ragweed, grass pollen, cockroaches, or cats. Woohoo!)
Speaking of lifestyle, let’s talk more about the sneaky non-physical ways that lifestyle factors can impact our immune system (and allergies specifically!).
This is especially worth exploring when you feel like you’re doing “all the things” on a physical level and you’re hitting a glass ceiling in terms of resolving adult-onset allergies.
(Disclaimer: I’m not promising any kind of cure for allergies but rather sharing complementary alternative methods to explore!)
Mental, emotional, and spiritual meaning of allergies: my experiences and interpretations
Please keep in mind everyone is different, and the following are patterns and correlations which I’ve identified based on my personal and clinical perceptions which are not exhaustive. I offer no guarantees or cures. These are just insights to consider.
Unhealed soul wounds
According to Nelson Schuman, emotional wounds or “soul wounds” (following any kind of event that causes us to feel physical, mental or emotional pain/hurt) left unhealed can open doors, giving certain demons or evil spirits (such as the “spirit of allergies” or the “spirit of infirmity”) legal rights to oppress us- in a variety of ways.
While everyone’s case is unique to them, my allergies followed a series of events in which certain people from my past had made me feel rejected, used, deceived, betrayed, or in a few cases, violated. (Note: this was a wide range on the severity spectrum with “mild” being overhearing some people I had trusted, talking bad about be behind my back… with the most severe cases being a physical violation.)
This is an interesting pattern I’ve observed anecdotally- clinically, and in my deliverance practice.
Betrayal and dishonor
Betrayal and dishonor exist on a spectrum; there are micro-betrayals and macro-betrayals.
Micro-betrayals
Some examples of the micro-betrayals that may precede allergies include (but aren’t limited to):
- Being mocked/teased
- Being used/manipulated
- Overhearing friend(s) say mean, hurtful things about you
Macro-betrayals
Examples of more severe dishonor and betrayal macro-level betrayals may include any of the following:
- Infidelity (physical OR emotional)
- Sexual violation
- Criminal-level deception/violation
- Being stolen from (whether physical items, finances, identity theft, or intellectual property)
These are terrible things- but unfortunately, I’ve come to realize not everyone is in their right mind and these things happen.
Being someone who is inherently naive and trusting, I’ve most definitely experienced my share of people who try to pull the wool over my eyes. But by the grace of God, I’ve always been able to uncover the truth about people before it was too late.
Below are some more signs and signals to look out for if you have allergies and you suspect they may have been preceded by unhealed soul wounds related to deceit/manipulation.
Deception and manipulation
When we take a look at what allergies are on a physical level, it’s your body’s way of revealing to you that someone in your life who is *supposed to be “safe”, benign, or harmless, should be seen and treated as a threat or an enemy, someone who is not to be trusted.
The message here is to be careful who you trust, beware of deception, be aware of your surroundings, and don’t always take everything at face value – things and people are not always what/who they appear to be.
Deception and manipulation are sub-pes of betrayal and dishonor which also exist on a spectrum from “micro” to “macro”, and everything in between.
Examples of deception and manipulation may include:
- Lies of omission (leaving out key parts of a story to twist a narrative)
- Empty promises
- Priming (often done in news media/propaganda)
- Framing (also often done in news media and propaganda)
- Gaslighting
- Stonewalling
- Back-handed compliments
- Giving bad advice with intent to sabotage your success (be it in relationships, academics, career, etc.)
Infidelity
Infidelity (physical and/or emotional “cheating” in a relationship) is a more severe and extreme form of betrayal, dishonor, deception and manipulation.
While physical infidelity is very objective and less acceptable on a societal level, emotional infidelity is more sneaky and can be considered a grey area in relationships because it exists on a spectrum. But it can hurt just as much.
In most cases, infidelity is followed by soul wounds such as grief, hurt, shame, and of course resentment/unforgiveness.
I’m not a therapist or a relationship coach. But if you suspect you could be dealing with infidelity of any kind, physical or emotional, I encourage you to acknowledge and address it sooner rather than later. (And as always, consult with a therapist/relationship coach for extra support.)
Sexual violation/trauma
Last but not least, I wanted to shed some light on how sexual violation/sexual assault and coercion can instill deep levels of fear and mistrust (as it should).
Anecdotally I’ve observed among people who reported eating a certain food around the time that they experienced a trauma (especially sexual trauma/violation of any kind) seem to experience an imprint or cellular memory around that food, and may be more likely to develop a physical reaction to that food.
For any and all types of sexual trauma, I encourage you to work with a qualified trauma-informed therapist and possibly a psychiatrist as well.
Unforgiveness as a demonic access point
We’ve all been hurt- and it can be hard to forgive the people who hurt us. However, unforgiveness is actually associated with physical health problems.
In my case, once I began forgiving (in my heart) people from my past who had hurt me (through Nelson Schuman’s Restored to Freedom deliverance process), and asked Jesus Christ to please heal each of the soul wounds I had identified from past experiences, I was then able to take authority and command demons that had attached to me through those people to leave (“go to the pit”) in the name of Jesus Christ, and- low and behold, a handful of my allergies are now gone (including an allergy to cats, which I had for most of my life prior!).
Keep in mind, forgiveness doesn’t mean giving people permission to stay in your life and continue to hurt you. It means letting go of any bitterness or resentment and giving them compassion- because hurt people hurt people. In most cases, people who hurt us were hurt by others in their lives first, which then made them susceptible to the evil that follows demonic oppression from unhealed soul wounds. It’s a vicious cycle!
Paranoia
To be paranoid is to be overly suspicious and distrusting of others, in ways that are irrational and unjustifiable. Those of us who are paranoid may fear that everyone and their hampster is out to get us, even if most people are just going about their day.
Going back to the manifestation of allergies on the physical level, let’s take a look at how allergies could be a reflection of paranoia:
- When we have allergies, our immune system is falsely perceiving things that are neutral (or in some cases, nourishing & beneficial) to be a THREAT and an enemy.
The juxtaposition and dichotomy here is pretty interesting. It can be easy for those of us who have spent the earlier part of our lives being too naive (and thus experiencing betrayal and dishonor by people we trusted) to THEN slip into a tendency towards paranoia.
(For the record, I feel that when our pendulum of trust swings initially toward the opposite direction of naivete, it can be a relatively NORMAL and healthy short-term, knee-jerk reaction after having gotten the wool pulled over our eyes one too many times!)
However, while it may feel safer to lean more towards being more paranoid than naive (lock your doors, don’t give out too much personal info to strangers, etc.), discernment and balance are still key here.
In my case, the paranoia I experienced was actually a “spirit of paranoia” that had gained legal access to me, after some of the unhealed soul wounds from my past. Once I forgave everyone who hurt me, and asked Jesus to heal my soul wounds, the paranoia and mistrust I began experiencing subsided.
Also, please consider consulting with a therapist and/or psychiatrist if you feel paranoia is interfering with your quality of life.
Hypochondria
When we look at hypochondria from a birds-eye overview, it’s essentially a different form of paranoia.
Allergies are a type of internal discernment problem in which our immune system is confusing inherently benign substances with dangerous substances.
In the case of hypochondria, instead of being overly concerned/suspicious of other people, hypochondriacs have a tendency to misinterpret benign physical symptoms they’re experiencing in their own bodies as being harmful/life-threatening.
(Note: As someone who is prone to hypochondria myself, and someone with real food allergies, I’m not suggesting that your allergies are “all in your head”.
I’m just pointing out the parallels of allergies on the physical level and hypochondria, which is essentially being overly fearful and reactive of benign physical symptoms, misinterpreting them as a potentially fatal diseases.)
If you suspect your allergies could be reflecting hypochondria (which can also be a sign of demonic oppression)…
- Ask me about 1-1 deliverance services!
- Consult with a therapist and/or psychiatrist as needed, if the hypochondria is interfering with your day-to-day quality of life and your ability to function.
Recap and final thoughts
On a physical level, allergies are representative of our internal security system labeling foods and/or particles from our environment (which are usually inherently neutral or beneficial) as harmful “antigens”.
Spiritually, based on my experiences and clinical observations, allergies may be reflection of unhealed soul wounds and unforgiveness following betrayal and dishonor which could be in the form of:
- Teasing
- Gossip
- Deceit
- Manipulation
- Sabotage
- Infidelity
- Sexual assault/violation
Alternatively/additionally, allergies may potentially reflect back to us patterns such as:
- Naivete
- Paranoia
- Hypochondria
If we wanted to take this a step further, we could anecdotally consider some types of environmental allergens as “neutral” (pollen, grass, trees, pet dander, etc.); these types of allergies may reflect betrayals from inherently neutral people (coworkers, classmates, etc.).
On the other hand, since food is inherently supposed to be nourishing and beneficial (an “ally), food allergies may represent or reflect back to us betrayals we’ve experienced from those who we considered to be close friends / confidantes.
Disclaimer: There’s no evidence to suggest that adverse events CAUSE allergies, nor am I trying to make that claim.
- It’s how our mind, body, and nervous system uniquely interpret and process adverse patterns/events (in combination with physical predispositions such as genetics, dysbiosis, etc.) that I believe may collectively contribute to the onset of allergies in some people.
Either way, I encourage you to make sure to also address your allergies on the PHYSICAL level (not just the mental/emotional/spiritual level).

Thank you, Jenna!
This was one of the best articles I’ve ever read about allergies and food intolerances! Very well written and has given me hope!
Thanks you so much!
Excellent article Jenna! I always wondered how/why I ended up with a long list of allergies, bad eczema (almost died from infected eczema age 1) asthma. Still have most of the allergies. Been dealing with Chrones/ UC for 40+ years. Still here though!
